Questions to Ask When Implementing Experience API (#xAPI)
In the past several years, the proliferation of learning applications has been exciting. Many EdTech products used the “freemium” business model to enter the market. But this also has resulted in serious data silos issues. According to an EdSurge report, the biggest pain of using EdTech applications is putting data together. There is no solution that helps to integrate data coming out of disparate software systems.
Visca is built to solve this problem by leveraging the latest learning standard Experience API, xAPI. There are 3 major reasons to use Visca.
It Solves the Data Integration Issue
In the education or training domain, although some learning application integration has been offered, it takes a lot of effort and new applications emerge too fast. Moreover, some activities, including mobile applications, Virtual Reality(VR) and simulators, cannot be integrated with web-based systems.
With Visca, it doesn’t matter where your content is and where learning happens. Visca offers standard vocabulary, recipes, and wrappers to application developers, so applications record behaviors in standard format. Data is flowable and ready to be utilized in real time.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Claiming to use xAPI doesn’t guarantee data interoperability since it’s a free form.
Is your xAPI implementation following the vocabulary best practice principles published by ADL (the Steward of xAPI)? Is your vocabulary machine-readable? Visca is the first adopter.

It Records Any Experience and Context
New technologies will always emerge, and job-embedded learning is growing. Visca allows us to record any experience that’s worth tracking with necessary context and metadata, no matter if it’s learning, training, or working.
Context-awareness enables us to leverage machine intelligence to respond and help learners. This response can happen in real time because xAPI prepares data for integration immediately.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Can the xAPI dataviz be embedded into your current LMS or BI dashboard to create an integrated view with other data?
Has your xAPI recipe design captured necessary context and metadata so that a smart learning environment can be created across applications?
It Obtains Deeper Insights into Learning Process
Visca gives you deeper insights into the learning process with granular data of interactions between users and activities. We can pinpoint problems in content or process design easily. It will also accumulate collective intelligence of using the content to give feedback to individual learners immediately.
Question to Ask Yourself:
Dataviz is crucial as a cognitive agent for humans to process volume data. Can your xAPI data be visualized readily for you to zoom in and out intuitively?
Visca Works with EdTech Application Providers
Visca isn’t built to compete with any EdTech providers; instead it has created some solutions for them to adopt xAPI very easily.
- Wrappers are created according to our well-designed recipes; developers simply fill in the blanks and don’t necessarily need to understand xAPI themselves. It also reduces communication efforts and errors.
- Embeddable dataviz which can be integrated into other EdTech application environments or BI tools.
- We do new recipe design, dataviz customization, and consulting and analysis support according to the goal of the project.
- Data stored in Visca or other Learning Record Store(LRS) can be reused. We partner with EdTech providers to add value to their products — they can monetize the data locked in their applications, and partner with others to create a seamless experience with programmable webhooks.
Getting more partners is one of our next stesp. The other next step is to craft an adaptive learning engine and a recommendation engine.
Visca has been implemented in Taipei city, Taiwan. All teachers and students, about 350,000 in number, in Taipei city will be using the solution powered by Visca. Other areas will soon join them. Visca is a small R&D team with learning designers, programmers, data scientists, customer engineers, and education consultants, all of whom are very passionate about learning!
